Data Capture and Photogrammetry
Data capture and photogrammetry have revolutionized the entertainment industry by bridging the gap between physical reality and digital creation, enabling unprecedented levels of photorealism in films, VFX, and video games. By utilizing specialized software to convert overlapping high-resolution photographs into 3D models, photogrammetry allows creators to scan real-world environments, props, and actors, transforming them into detailed digital assets.
The importance of this technology lies in three main areas:
Hyperrealism and Authenticity: It enables the creation of lifelike digital doubles, environments, and props that are difficult to achieve through traditional manual modeling.
Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness: It drastically speeds up the development pipeline, allowing artists to bypass manual sculpting for complex structures.
Virtual Production and Immersive Worlds: It supports groundbreaking technologies like "The Volume" (used in The Mandalorian), where scanned real-world locations are projected onto LED screens, providing accurate lighting and depth for actors.
From AAA games like Star Wars Battlefront to blockbusters like Blade Runner 2049, photogrammetry is essential for producing high-fidelity assets, reducing development times, and elevating visual storytelling to new standards.
Insight uses a number of forms for data capture within our research ranging from techniques that are common in the film industry to those in the scientific community. Insight has a Division established for the Capture and Analysis of Data in Science and Engineering. We also have a gallery of some of the photos and videos that we have captured on Our Research and Photogrammetry. We would like to work with you in the capture of data that meets your business needs. We also provide training in Data Capture and Photogrammetry.
